Building Resiliency and Self-Advocacy

In preparation for students' transition to Junior High, students will be viewing and discussing videos related to growing their brains with effort and developing skills to turn failure into learning.  Students will participate in activities that foster these skills and they will track their individual progress.  I will incorporate this into our daily learning and our circle conversations.

To focus our efforts, we will often reflect on famous quotes that will displayed in our classroom.  Some examples include:

  • It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. ~Albert Einstein

  • Becoming is better than being.

  • You aren't failing until you start to blame. ~John Wooden

I have included the videos we will be viewing below.  Some are marked "For Parents/Teachers".  These videos are some that I have viewed as part of my Masters program and may be of interest to you but will not be shown to students.

GROW or GO

In our classroom, you have two choices:

You can GROW

and allow others to do the same.

OR

You can GO

-for a walk (Brain Break)

-for a bike ride (Bike Break)

-to the Work Space

-to an alternate location

You might need a break if you are feeling tired, frustrated, bored or upset.  I will help you as you begin to identify what your body feels like when you need a break.  I will direct you to take a walk, go to the quiet table or to an alternate location.
